May 29, 2025 Deployment Summary

Yesterday, a severe thunderstorm rated for 3 inch hail stones and 80mph winds moved thru parts of Texas. From Brownfield to Big Spring, this storm left a trail of big hail, wind damage, and a wall of dust preceded it.

The Project WeatherEye Field Team deployed 3 RDD units. RDD-4 has a known camera issue and needs a new module installed. It was deployed anyway to test some new software. It lasted most of the storm, which was all we needed it to do. It captured the beginning of our massive supercell!

Video frame from RDD-4.

RDD-5 was positioned east of Brownfield, but north of Tahoka. It did not see anything noteworthy.

However, Zach from Tennessee Storm Hunters deployed RDD-6 right in the path of not only big hail and very strong winds, but also a flash flood near just south of Brownfield!

Timelapse of RDD-6’s encounter with the storm. Notice the transition from wind to big hail to flash flood.

Here’s a real-time clip of the large hail bouncing around in front of the unit.

It’s also worth noting that our mobile live streamers caught some interesting activity as well.

Tornado? Maybe, maybe not.
